Talkback: Swim cadence: Is there a perfect stroke rate?

Hi, This article seems not to be complete as it recommends a drill but the drill is not detailed. Where can I view the full article? Thanks

Karen, as you say the drill is described but not in enough detail to use.

Try this. You will need a Finis Tempo Trainer Pro or a Wetronome and something to make notes pool side.

Do a warm up. Set the Tempo at a swim cadence several strokes lower than you normally swim then swim 80m to 100m, time your swim and also note how well you felt swimming. Increase the cadence by 1 or 2 strokes per minute and repeat. record details as before. Repeat. Expect to find that as you up your cadence your swim times reduce and your swimming feels better. There comes a sweet spot when you are fastest and feel good in the water. Beyond that cadence you start to feel ragged and your speed drops off. That sweet spot should be your optimal cadence.
  • I think you mean stroke cycles per minute, not strokes per minute. 25-30 stroke cycles (2 strokes per cycle) = 50-60 strokes per minute
