Clip on Tri bars on carbon handlebars

I know the established wisdom is that you shouldn’t put clip on Tri bars on a carbon handlebar, unless the manufacturer says you can, but has anybody ever had a catastrophic failure or is this a bit of an urban myth?

I’m not a structural scientist, but it seems to me that clip ons mounted close to the stem (where the carbon is strengthened), must surely be strong enough to withstand a minimally tightened clamp (probably onto a rubber shim), and then a rider leaning their elbows on it?

Has anybody given it a go and lived to tell the tale?

The upshot to this was that I managed to find the manufacturers guidelines and it was as I suspected. Placed close to the stem and not tightened over 4nm was fine.
