Bike maintenance

I've just bought myself my first bike after getting advice on this forum (thanks guys!) - a Claud Butler Giro D'Italia.



Now I am pretty clueless and I am just sitting there admiring how lovely it looks!!!



Where do I even start? I know I obviously need to look after the bike but how?! I don't seem to be feeling much maternal instinct other than to stroke it!!!
