quad cramp/spasm

I have just completed my first middle distance tri(Marazion) and for the first time i had painful spasms in my inner quads. It started half way round the bike course and almost stopped me coming out the saddle on the climbs. It then came on again(constantly) for the first two miles of the run.
I have burning quads regularly on hilly training sessions but never like this. any ideas?

    Try doing some strengthening exercises for Adductor muscles, these get very little exercise but can be used to balance some ITB problems as well,might be these that are causing the spasms rather than just blaiming the quads.
